Edisto Beach

Edisto Beach is a town in Colleton County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 641 at the 2000 census. Wild Dunes

Wild Dunes is an oceanfront resort on Isle of Palms, South Carolina, USA. It is 1,600 acres (6 km2) on the north end of the island and has controlled-access gates.

Wild Dunes has two famous golf courses on it: the Wild Dunes Links Course, and the Harbor Course, both designed by Tom Fazio. It also has a nationally ranked tennis complex with 17 clay courts, and an award-winning family recreation program.

In early 2008, large-scale beach erosion led to the depletion of the beachfront area of Wild Dunes. The beachfront was greatly reduced, waterfront buildings received structural damage, and the 18th hole of the Links Golf Course was washed out. After a lengthy process, at the end of the Summer of 2008 the City of Isle of Palms finished repairing the beach. Approximately 900,000 cubic feet (25,000 m3) of sand was pumped in from offshore, leading to the restoration of over 150 yards of beachfront. Also, the 18th hole of the Links Course has been repaired, but is now a Par 3 instead of the old Par 5. Wild Dunes is working with the golf course designer Tom Fazio to restore the course's final hole to the Par 5 it used to be.

It is also the site of a major battle of the American Revolution at Fort Sullivan (Now Fort Moultrie) on June 28, 1776. As defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, and used by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes only, Sullivans Island is included within the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metropolitan area and the Charleston-North Charleston Urbanized Area.

Kiawah Island

Kiawah is a sea island, or barrier island, on the Atlantic coast of the United States. Located 15 miles (24 km) south of Charleston in Charleston County, South Carolina, it is operated today largely as a beach and golf resort — the Kiawah Island Golf Resort — with spacious villas, beaches, large and acclaimed golf courses, and other attractions. In the 2000 census, Kiawah Island's population was 1,163; as defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget and used by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes, the island is included within the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metropolitan area.

Seabrooke Island

Seabrook Island is a town in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,250 at the 2000 census.

As defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, and used by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes only, Seabrook Island is included within the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metropolitan area.

In 1970, the diocese sold about 1,100 acres (4.5 km2) to private developers who planned the private, residential community that Seabrook Island is today. Eighteen years later, the town of Seabrook was incorporated, and it celebrated a decade of private ownership and self-government in 1997.

Johns Island

Johns Island is located to the west of James Island and to the east of Wadmalaw Island and inshore of Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island. It is separated from the mainland by the tidal Stono River, which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Roughly one-third of the island is within the city limits of Charleston. The island is home to the Angel Oak, a 1400 year old Southern live oak tree, and is also known for its tomato farms. The population of John's Island is growing because of its proximity to Charleston. Despite substantial and vocal opposition to development, it is rapidly changing from a rural farming community to a suburban bedroom community. The 2007 census reported a population of 13,943. The island has a land area of 216.83 km˛ (83.72 sq mi), making it the fourth largest island on the east coast of the United States and the 61st largest island in the United States. The island was originally occupied by Native American tribes, including the Kiawah, before the English settlers reached Charleston. The island later was crossed over by the British in their siege of Charleston, and was the site of several skirmishes in the Civil War.

James Island

James Island is one of South Carolina's most urban Sea Islands. The island is separated from peninsular downtown Charleston by the Ashley River, from the mainland by Wappoo Creek and the Wappoo Cut, and from Johns Island by the Stono River. It lies inshore of Morris Island and Folly Beach.

Fort Sumter is located on an island just off the eastern tip of James Island and is the site of the first battle of the Civil War. Bombardment of Fort Sumter was started from Fort Johnson which is located on the eastern portion of James Island.

For much of the period before and after the formation of the United States, James Island land was largely agricultural with close to 20 plantations making up much of the island. Growth accelerated after World War II and James Island became a suburban bedroom community to Charleston.

As of the 2000 census, the United States Census Bureau reported that 33,781 people lived on the island. Approximately one-half of the island lies within the city limits of Charleston, and the remainder of the island is unincorporated since the State Supreme Court deemed the Town of James Island was illegally formed.
